We know our members are a travelling bunch and we’d love to share your tips, tricks, trips, adventures and pictures with other members. Big trips (which is the best of the Hawaiian Islands?), small trips (discovered a great restaurant in Montréal!), fun trips (great seniors discount at Wonderland available!)… we’d love to share any and all travelling notes.

Here’s the first one to get us started!
St. John’s NL – Not just icebergs and whales!
Members Richard and Cindy visited St. John’s NL in May. It was their first time visiting Canada’s newest province. Their visit was limited to the St. John’s area but they thoroughly enjoyed the city and its nearby areas. They were able to see the first of the 2017 icebergs (but no whales, except, sadly, a dead one that been caught in the ice floe and had washed up on shore), experience some great local music and enjoy lots of fresh seafood. St. John’s weather in May can be cool, but knowing that, warmer coats were packed and the coolness didn’t stop them from hiking the East Coast trail, exploring local beaches, enjoying the local culture and beverages on George Street and checking out the many historical sites. They definitely plan on going back and exploring this friendly, lively, beautiful province more.

“MUST DO” ACTIVITY: Friday night Kitchen Party upstairs at the Quidi Vidi Brewery! The band was great, Iceberg beer is top notch and the people were fantastic. Great evening of music, fun, dancing and laughter!
TOP THREE THINGS TO DO/SEE:
- The view: If you are able, explore on foot – the jellybean houses, the views from the Battery, Signal Hill and Cape Spear, the East Coast Trail – great sights that will offer fabulous views of the ocean and the city.
- The music: George Street (and the downtown area in general) are alive with local talent most nights. Definitely check out a few bands and enjoy a few drinks with the locals. Yes, St. John’s residents go to George Street too! Also check out Erin’s Pub (Water Street) to see if Generations is playing while you’re there. If they are, go. You won’t be sorry!
- Get screeched in! Newfoundland Screech Rum has become a distinct part of Newfoundland and Labrador culture. Many are familiar with the fun and famous “Screech-In” ceremony, where a visitor or CFA (“Come From Away”) can be awarded the title of “honourary Newfoundlander”. The Screech Room, at the Spirit of Newfoundland, is a great place to, yes, kiss the cod! It’s housed in the Masonic Temple, one of the province’s most beautiful and historic buildings and the team there is full of local information and screech!
